For our first project we were asked to choose a product and review a published, peer-reviewed Life Cycle Assessment or Analysis. In this instance I chose to review a service - that is Car Sharing. These are services like ZipCar, Flexcar and Communauto. The LCA I reviewed “Feasibility and scope of life cycle approaches to sustainable consumpution.” The system boundaries chosen by the authors of the study were in the context of household CO2 emissions as the authors believe “car sharing is a much-cited example of a sustainable consumption measure.” And the life cycle stage that had the greatest impact included what they call the “rebound effect”… that light car sharing and not using a car lead to per-capita greenhouse emissions of nearly 20% less than a car owner; or car sharers have 70% to 60% higher greenhouse gass emissions…
