Time-S-Tick

Time: In Your Hands

We’ve become accustomed to viewing time or using our eyes to tell time. If we removed our sense of sight, what opportunities would it provide to the ways we think of time keeping? For our first project Neo and I presented a clock for the blind with a fully functional proof of concept. Neither a time stick, nor time ticks…  This project raises several questions: Can we use our senses other than sight to effectively track time? Could this new method have an opt-in mechanism so that it’s non-intrusive yet readily available? Will it cause a change in behavior for the user, or will new behaviours need to be introduced? Here’s a visual depiction:

The stick is vibrating. Any time the user stops movement, say at a stop-light, the hour is given as the ticks pop up to provide the hour. A single click at the end gives the minutes. More precisely a double click provides the seconds. In this way the hour is ever-present. Here’s the processing sketch Neo devised.
